Five

DONOVAN was sitting in the kitchen when Kelon found him. He didn’t hesitate, just walked up to him and decked him. The chair crashed over. Donovan came up with a snarl, fists clenched. “What in hell was that for?”

“For Robin.”

He drew back his fist again. With reflexes and strength that matched his own, Donovan caught it. “What about Robin?”

“She knows you asked me to entertain her.”

“Shit.”

“Yeah.” Kelon yanked his hand free. “Shit. She thinks I pity her.”

“And you don’t?”

“No.” His claws cut into his palm.

“Did you scare her?”

“Not nearly as much as she scared me.”

Donovan righted the chair. “What do you mean?”

“I’m a Protector, Donovan. It’s all I’ve ever been.”

“So am I.”

“I’m damn good at it.”

“The best there’s ever been.”

“I’d be a lousy mate.”

The two-beat hesitation before Donovan answered was telling.

“Not necessarily.”

“Yeah. That’s what I thought, too.”

Donovan put the pieces together.

“Robin is your mate?”

“No need to sound so horrified.”

Donovan walked over to the cabinet and pulled out a bottle of whiskey and hooked two glasses out of the dishwasher. “Damn, Kelon, I’m sorry.”

“Sorry about what?”

He opened his mouth and shut it. “Nothing.”

“Like hell, nothing.”

The only time Donovan touched whiskey was when there was bad news. Kelon took the glass and pulled up a chair at the end of the table. “Spill it.”

“It’s not my secret to tell.”

“She’s my mate.”

Donovan shook his head and picked up his glass. “She hasn’t accepted your mark. Until then, she’s under my protection. And that means her secrets, too.”

“Then protect her. Tell me what threatens her.”

“Right now, the two wild cards in Buddy’s entourage.”

“Not Buddy?” Buddy of the heavy fists. “Did he rape her?”

“Best I can figure, no.”

“What do you mean, ‘best you can figure’?”

“She doesn’t talk about it. Just wants it buried. But Lisa says no. Buddy only roughed her up.”

“What’s your impression?”

"That he’s a little boy who lashes out when he doesn’t get what he wants.”

“And he wanted her.”

“Yes.”

“What did she want?” Jealousy ripped through him at the thought of another man feeling those soft arms come around his neck, at feeling the way those full breasts melted into his chest as her breath sighed against his throat.

Donovan took a sip of his whiskey. “That you’re going to have to ask her.”

“I’m your brother.”

“And she’s sister to my mate with no one to stand for her but me. I won’t betray her trust.”

Kelon wanted to tear into something—his brother, Buddy, Buddy’s friends, it didn’t matter. He needed to do something to release the anger. “I’m her mate.”

“Then you have two choices. Get her to accept your mark, or get her to talk.”

“There is a third choice.” Kelon took a too-casual drink. “I could just beat a confession out of you.”

Donovan leaned back. “I might have mated human, but I’m the same son of a bitch you’ve been cursing for years. There’s no way in hell you can make me do anything.”

No, there wasn’t. Like him, Donovan had a strict code of honor, and he took his responsibilities to the women in his care seriously.
